The team designed a new site master plan for student housing within the central core of campus, focused on creating a unique, vibrant, and secure student living complex. The master plan design provides connections to the campus core to the west and future multifamily, mixed-use, and student apartment developments to the north and east.
The new dormitory-style building features a mixture of double, triple, and quad bedrooms, 500 beds total, providing a variety of living styles and price points for their diverse student population. Communal restrooms are located in each building wing and floor, and a shared laundry facility is located on the ground level outside of the student courtyard. The housing is complemented by a rich program of student centered social, study, and collaboration spaces including wing lounges, floor lounges, activity rooms, study rooms, and community kitchens.
In the interest of creating an inviting home for the students and guests, public amenities such as a multipurpose room, lounge/game room, study space, market, and housing offices reside in an adjacent community building. Sited just north of the housing building, the community building creates a welcoming and secure courtyard, providing true indoor/outdoor student connectivity.
The new student housing complex’s exterior was designed to feature roof-to-ground art, providing what university officials considered the perfect canvas to highlight artists in the community. Reproducing murals onto high-quality vinyl will enable CSUDH to change the art every few years. The highly visible art project has a transformative quality, particularly in accelerating the installation of other public art on campus. Currently, the murals feature the art of Los Angeles artist iris yirei hu. The two towering murals that greet students at the main entrance of the student housing complex were taken from an installation hu did in collaboration with Elder Julia Bogany, a member of the Tongva tribe who serves on the tribal council and as their cultural consultant. She is prominently featured on one of the murals.
