ProjectsHarvey Mudd College McGregor Center Wins Coveted Grand Award in Learning by Design Magazine’s 2022 Design Awards
Learning By Design Magazine has recognized Steinberg Hart’s Scott A. McGregor Computer Science Center at Harvey Mudd College in the 2022 Architectural & Interior Design Awards. The building won a Grand Award, just one of just five awarded from over one hundred projects submitted. Recognition from the esteemed jury lauded the project for its “modern and colorful design aesthetic” and “sequence of light-filled spaces and a well-balanced ecosystem of program and collaboration spaces.”
A modern jewel within an Edward Durrell Stone designed campus, the Scott. A McGregor Computer Science Center was designed to meet two pressing needs: new space for the rapidly expanding computer science program and a vibrant area for project-based learning. The 37,000 SF building provides a home for the Computer Science department, previously dispersed among multiple campus buildings.
The program includes teaching labs, clinics, offices, study and collaboration space. The makerspace provides a large, open workspace for collaboration, networking, and socialization. Its “zoned” layout includes a collaborative lounge, co-working and idea development areas, rapid prototyping, and light to medium fabrication.
The design embraces inclusion, experiential and interdisciplinary educational spaces, nooks of varying size and type to promote engagement, and high touch faculty-student interaction in a stimulating environment that celebrates STEM.
The McGregor Center’s corner location, proximity to other Claremont colleges and internal campus connections are unique. The building’s courtyard is a destination for student engagement and is a threshold between the existing community and the heart of the campus. It welcomes the Claremont community, providing new opportunities for community engagement and showcases multiple integrated solutions that address health, wellness, inclusivity, connection with nature, and healthy materials simultaneously.
