The new Gymnasium Building is designed to respect the beautiful Folsom Lake College campus within the Los Rios Community College District and support the emerging and future athletic programs while crafting an architectural image that embodies the spirit of the Falcons. The subtle bird-like image of the new Gymnasium Building design is present in the two gyms spread as “wings” symbolizing the free-spirited Falcons.
The design team was intentional about working within the constraints of the existing campus forms and aesthetics to seamlessly tie the new Gymnasium Building into the campus context. The Gymnasium Building has curved, barrel vault roof forms clad in a metal standing seam that echo the roof treatment used on campus buildings which are in turn inspired and create a vernacular link to the hillside backdrop of the campus. Taking cues from Aspen Hall, the Gymnasium building uses slate stone and curvilinear arches to create the Arcade leading to the Lobby. By applying these and other key features to the design, the Gymnasium Building becomes an architecturally integrated thread of the campus fabric.
