PeopleMonocle’s The Urbanist Podcast Interviews David Hart on Homelessness in the United States
Steinberg Hart’s President & CEO David Hart was recently featured on Monocle 24 Radio’s The Urbanist podcast to both discuss the state of homelessness nationwide and to explore potential solutions for the very serious problem that continues to affect hundreds of thousands of Americans and millions globally. Nominee in the Smartest Podcast category of the 2019 British Podcast awards, The Urbanist is hosted by Andrew Tuck, and it discusses how to make better cities — whether that be through technology, transit, or architecture — and unpacks relevant current events.
The current pandemic environment has brought light to both new issues and new potential solutions to this growing problem. In this podcast episode, Hart explores what he and his peers can and should do as architects to address the problem of homeless and bring the discussion of the topic into spaces beyond the urban centers of our country. According to Hart, the problem of homelessness is invisible to many, but this pandemic has cast a new light on the issue. Identifying a lack of awareness surrounding homelessness and the urgency of the situation as one of many key problems, Hart explains that, “From an awareness standpoint, [homelessness] is concentrated in certain parts of the country and largely is ignored or invisible — people choose to make it invisible in other parts of the country. As architects, our job is to make the world a better place. Shelter is a basic human right.”
