Steinberg Hart-designed Scott A. McGregor Computer Science Center at Harvey Mudd College has been recognized by the Society of College and University Planners (SCUP) with a 2023 SCUP Excellence Award, Honor, for Excellence in Architecture for a New Building. 

The SCUP Excellence Awards honor achievement in strategic, integrated planning that results in exemplary buildings and grounds, institutional success, and careers that inspire. As a juried competition, the awards program is open to professional service providers and institutions that have prepared designs or plans for two-year and four-year colleges, universities, academic medical and research centers, and public or private institutions. The jury selected 26 entries to receive awards this year; one Jury’s Choice, nine Honor, eleven Merit, three Honorable Mention(s), and two Special Citation. Winning entries will be featured during a session at SCUP’s 2023 Annual Conference, July 30th – August 1st in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Scott A. McGregor Computer Science Center and its makerspace house the school’s rapidly expanding computer science program, which was previously scattered across campus. As the college’s second new academic building in 25 years, the  36,000 SF Zero Net Energy building creates a new campus gateway to the College, connecting it with its surrounding community. With new state-of-the-art educational spaces, a makerspace, and social spaces, the McGregor Center has fundamentally transformed the Harvey Mudd College student experience.

This SCUP Excellence Award is the latest in a long list of accolades for the project, including an AIA National Education Facility Design Award, top honors from AIA Los Angeles, a Grand Award from Learning by Design, and Southern California Development Forum, among others.
